Tooth Extraction in Austin, TX
In an ideal world, we would all be able to preserve our natural teeth for the rest of our lives. Unfortunately, teeth can become so badly broken or crowded that extraction near you is the only way to restore dental health.
While tooth extraction is rarely our dentists at Lake Travis Family & Cosmetic Dentistry’s first choice, they will do everything possible to make the surgery as painless as possible. We want our patients to understand what they can expect when they make an appointment for a tooth extraction at Lake Travis Family & Cosmetic Dentistry.
Tooth Extraction Process
Before beginning the procedure, your dentist will ensure that your mouth is sufficiently numb so that you do not experience pain during the extraction. Before injecting a potent local anesthetic into the area, the dentist will usually apply a topical numbing lotion to the gums surrounding the tooth.
Step 1: Removing the Tooth
One of our dentists near you can begin extracting the tooth once the area is numb. In many cases, they gently rock the tooth back and forth with a set of forceps until it slides out of the socket. If the tooth is impacted (stuck in the gum line), as with wisdom teeth, the dentist may need to make a small incision in your gums and remove the tooth in pieces.
Step 2: Closing the Gap
Our dentists in Austin, TX must seal the gap left by the extracted tooth after washing out the socket to eliminate any leftover tooth or bone pieces. Our dentist can sew up the region if the tooth was impacted or multiple teeth were extracted at once.
To stop bleeding, we will place gauze over the wound, and you will be asked to bite down on it for roughly an hour. You can also use an ice pack on your cheek to reduce swelling.
Tooth Extraction Recovery
- It normally takes a few days to recover from a tooth extraction.
- A blood clot should form over the extraction site during this time.
- Certain actions, including vigorous rinsing or spitting, smoking, blowing your nose, or drinking through a straw, might dislodge the clot and prolong healing, which can be uncomfortable.
